The Yards
Landform prepared civil engineering and landscape architectural design for The Yards for Flaherty and Collins, an apartment living neighborhood in an up-and-coming area of downtown Kansas City, Missouri.
As a stockyard exchange, the site’s history helped the Landform team focus the design, utilize reclaimed bricks, and incorporate exterior and interior materials that evoke the location’s former use.
Programmatically, the project’s 230 unit development includes a wide range of elements, including an outdoor pool, full outdoor kitchen, a raised yoga lawn, lush native plantings, and a dog park.
Landform’s team faced design challenges, including complex underground utility coordination, site grading constraints, and working within a district’s parameters with a distinct history.
Plantings primarily utilize species native to the proximity of the Kansas River. Greenspace is almost exclusively planted with perennials, shrubs, and trees, with minimal lawn. Bike commuting and recreation are given high priority with ample outdoor parking and interior storage and maintenance areas.
Marketed to active, outdoors-loving clientele, the private exterior courtyard was central to The Yards’ design process.
